About Molly

Hailed by The New York Times for her “powerful sound and striking stage presence,” actor-soprano Molly Mustonen continues to garner critical acclaim throughout the United States and Europe for her “strong singing and acting” (Huffington Post) and versatility across stage, screen and all genres of music. 

Hailing from the heartland of Minnesota, Molly has been recognized by Opera News as "a real talent" for her “sensitive and nuanced portrayal” of Nina in the New York City premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's opera, The Seagull. She reprised the role in Hungary as an esteemed winner of the Armel International Opera Competition and Festival. This triumphant European premiere performance was streamed live to more than a million subscribers in over 40 countries, broadcasted from Hungary's iconic National Theatre.

Molly's artistry across musical theatre is equally exciting. In her New York City off-Broadway triumph, critics lauded her "luminous and lovely" (The New York Times) portrayal of Rosabella in the smash hit and extended run of Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella. Her role debut as The Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods with Holy-City Arts and Lyric Opera (HALO) showcased her versatility, while additional roles as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady with Syracuse Opera, Marian Paroo in The Music Man with St. Petersburg Opera, Nellie Forbush in Rodgers and Hammerstein's timeless classic South Pacific with both Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre and St Petersburg Opera, Julie Jordan in Carousel, and Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins was celebrated by critics and audiences alike.

Her debut as Guest Artist with Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater showcased her immense talent as she earned rave reviews in the lead role of Nellie Forbush in Rodgers and Hammerstein's timeless classic, South Pacific. Molly reprised the role of Nellie Forbush in the Saint Petersberg Opera production of South Pacific with consistent praise from critics and audiences. Molly's prowess as a principal artist is undeniable, as she brought to life memorable characters such as Julie Jordan in Carousel, and Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins.

Molly's rich operatic repertoire includes Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Magda in La Rondine, Abigail Williams in The Crucible, Mimi in La Bohème with the National Lyric Opera, Musetta in La Bohème, Frasquita in Carmen with Opera of the Hamptons, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Utah Festival Opera, Beauty in Gianinni's Beauty and the Beast, Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri, The Wife in Wargo's The Music Shop, Madame Silverpiel in The Impresario, Romilda in Handel's Serse, and Martha Sheldon in the award-winning European premiere production of Robert Ward's The Crucible at the Mezzo Television Opera Festival in Szeged, Hungary.  

Collaborating with some of the world's leading modern composers, Molly was featured in the role of Elizabeth in the World Premiere reading of Thomas Pasatieri's God Bless Us, Everyone. Her additional New York premieres include Florida Fandango in Randall Eng's Florida, Ms. Hedgehog in Tobias Picker's The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Nina in The Seagull Sophie in Picker's Emmeline, and Tallulah Carter in Pasatieri's The Hotel Casablanca, for which critics proclaimed Molly as “nothing short of sensational.

Molly's dedication to her craft is evident not only in her exceptional talent but also in her academic accomplishments. She holds a Master of Vocal Arts from the prestigious University of Houston and is the proud recipient of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts Scholarship, the Dean’s Artistic Excellence Scholarship.
